Geography - Year 9 Choices

Course content - What will you be studying?

During Year 9 we will study some very exciting Geography that shapes the world we live in. We will start by looking at Coasts, a great topic for our location. We will then move onto looking at Resources in the world and how people overcome the shortage of vital resources.

For the second part of the year, we will study the Ecosystems of the world, with a particular focus on warm and cold environments. This teaches us about those extreme places and how people and animals survive in these environments.

We then finish our year with a focused look at Tsunamis and the impact this has on people and the environment. This is developing our knowledge from the Year 8 Tectonics course. All of the topics show how fragile our world is and gives us a real sense of how Geography can influence people’s lives and the environment we live in.

Assessment

Students will be assessed through a variety of formative methods throughout the lessons. There will also be a summative assessment at the end of each topic. Each topic will have a “Geog Pop” at the end of the assessment process, whereby students will revisit the assessment and attempt a “Pop” of Geography to improve and further their learning. This will help students reflect and become stronger Geographers. Each assessment will guide them towards the Geography GCSE style of answering questions, therefore making it become a “habit” when they continue into the full GCSE course.

Enrichment opportunities (Extra curricular clubs)

It is essential in Geography that we learn outside of the classroom. Not only will we keep you up to date with regular TV documentaries, magazines and books, but we will also guide you to the very best resources online to enrich your learning.

Fieldwork is an essential part of the course and brings an experience back to the classroom to further our learning and geographical enquiry skills.

There will also be a Geography club for those keen Geographers who want to learn more about the world around them and hopefully in the future, some optional Geography trips abroad.
