Performing Arts - Year 9 Choices

Course content - What will you be studying?

Making, Performing and Evaluating are key parts of the Performing Arts programme in Year 9. Students will be introduced to a wide range of theatre practitioners and performance styles and will develop their understanding through workshops, research and performances.

Students will explore devising, exploration of key practitioners, script work and musical theatre (if interested). Students will also learn about a range of roles within the theatre industry and have a chance to put these into practice including production and design skills.

Part of this year will be about practising "real-life scenarios" as a theatre maker and work in teams to respond to set tasks (eg Make a Festival). Students will take part in performances as well as create a "digital portfolio" to document their research, rehearsals and evaluate their work.

This year is designed to build on prior knowledge and skills from KS3 and give students a good range of knowledge, understanding and skills to move onto the KS4 BTEC course. If you choose not to take Performing Arts further after Year 9, this year would be great for building confidence and skills, developing teamwork skills as well as having fun being creative and making work.

Assessment

Students will be assessed through performances for each "topic".

Students will also be assessed on their research, knowledge and understanding, rehearsal and process through a "digital portfolio", which will include research mind-maps and notes, rehearsal logs, videos and evaluations.

Enrichment opportunities (Extra curricular clubs)

Students can develop their skills by getting involved with our Millbay Academy Productions (performing or backstage/design team). We will also be starting other regular weekly clubs including dance. Students could also access the Music Department's clubs to develop their music knowledge and skills to support their work in Performance.

Millbay Academy has links and opportunities with TRP and TR2 - Eg the free weekly TR2 Hub Drama Group and links to Young Company.

Students will have the opportunity to go to the theatre and have external theatre companies come into school so they can experience professional and touring theatre companies work.
