Art and Design - Year 9 Choices

Course content - What will you be studying?

In Year 9, students will build upon the skills they have learnt during Year 7 and Year 8 to prepare them for further study within Art & Design.

There will be a large focus on building students observational drawing further. Students will take part in short and snappy projects giving them opportunities to experience working to a deadline. Within these mini projects, students will be given the opportunity to play and experiment with a range of materials, processes and techniques both graphic and 3D, enabling them to become proficient in using different media and exploring what they enjoy and what kind of art pathway they want to pursue.

There will also be an opportunity for students to undertake their own project. These projects could be related to student’s work in other areas of their curriculum, for example stage design for ‘Macbeth’ or Viking Celtic design etc., giving them ownership to lead their own learning. Students will be guided and supported through one-to-one tutorials and group critiques. Students will be able to showcase all of the skills they have developed and present this in an end of year exhibition.

Assessment

Students will be assessed and monitored on evidence based coursework, which will include recording work in sketchbooks and in a digital portfolio.

They will be expected to develop skills in both practical and technical processes, through drawing, recording, experimentation, refinement and outcomes. Students will also build the skills and knowledge needed to show an understanding of their work with evaluative processes and for research into historical and contemporary practitioner.

Enrichment opportunities (Extra curricular clubs)

There will be opportunities to participate with artists and access to PCA facilities to undertake a range of creative workshops, linking our goal to enhance the professional development and industry links in the arts. Students can develop their skills by getting involved with our timetabled morning art clubs. There will also be opportunities to visit exhibitions within the local area and also to some national galleries.
