French - Year 9 Choices

Course content - What will you be studying?

After studying French both in Year 7 and Year 8, during this transitional year we will aim to:

  • explore cultural aspects of France and other French speaking countries. For example, looking at what people eat and drink, how people celebrate, the music they listen to, the sports they like to play, etc. Learning about places and people might encourage you to travel in the future!
  • master French grammar and vocabulary. You will be learning the name of more things, people and places in French and also master how to build sentences about yourself referring to the present, the past and the future. Your sentences will become more complex and more interesting! You will impress your family and friends by knowing way more French than them!

We will mainly focus on your listening and speaking skills, as they are the most important skills you need to communicate with people, but will develop your reading and writing skills too.

These are the foundations you will need if you choose to continue learning GCSE French in Year 10. You will get a flavour of what the GCSE will be like by attempting a variety of simplified exam-style questions such as photo descriptions, role-plays, extended writing pieces and translation tasks. Year 9 will be a great dive into culture AND language!

Assessment

Students will be assessed informally throughout the term through a variety of listening, speaking, reading and writing tasks. These assessments will aim at spotting misconceptions and areas of the language they might find more challenging. Time for improvement will be planned for in the lessons as well as part of their home learning.

At the end of each main unit, students will have a more formal assessment to check how well they can recall vocabulary and manipulate the language when their books are closed.

Enrichment opportunities (Extra curricular clubs)

Language Club will enable students to either to learn more French or explore other languages by accessing fun and engaging websites such as Duolingo, Memrise, Linguascope, as well as a collection of self-teaching books in various languages.

Additionally, we are aiming to organise a trip to France to offer an opportunity for students to apply what they have learnt in class in a real context.
