Course Content - What will you be studying?

Science helps us answer the What? Why? and How? of Biological, Chemical and Physical phenomena that occur within, and around us, every day of our lives. It provides us with a whole new vocabulary for describing the events we see and experience, and requires a different way of thinking.

Students will study interesting and exciting topics in Biology, Chemistry and Physics, they will be encouraged to work scientifically and are expected to complete a number of required practical tasks during the course. The students will have the opportunity to study topics ranging from the human body, earth science and chemical reactions. They will develop their skills to question, to research and to construct, iterate and reposition through lab work, debating, collaborative research group work, role play and writing with purpose through real life situations.

Students will achieve an equivalent of two GCSE's in Combined Science.

Assessment weighting - Exams / Coursework

There are six written examinations taken at the end of Year 11: 2 papers for each Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Students can be entered for these at either Foundation Tier (Grade 1 - Grade 5) or Higher Tier (Grade 4 - Grade 9).

Each paper counts for 16.7% of the GCSE, is worth 70 marks and is 1 hour 15 minutes in length. The questions are multiple choice, structured, closed short answer and open response.

There is no coursework element in this subject option.

This course is suitable for all pupils.

If you have ever looked at something and wondered how it works, or where it came from, then science is for you. Science teaches us to analyse and explore the world around us. It helps us to design and create new things. Our science team is dedicated to making science accessible and enjoyable for every young person.
